Yesterday the US saw an awesome 1-2 victory in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase. Throughout the race Emma Coburn and Courtney Frerichs stayed with the leading pack. And Right near the end of the race they pulled ahead of the other runners to take first and second in the steeple. This is the first time since 1952 that an american has won the steeple chase and the first time since 1912 that an american duo has swept a distance event. Congratulations to our athletes that have competed so far, and congratulations to Emma and Courtney for making history.
Watching this race made me want to get up and go running. I hope it does the same for you.
I wanted to find one that I had never heard about so I decided to check and see if any of the radio stations had any. This was a great decision. The one that stood out to me the most was The Wasatch Mile. This is an attachment of the Company Cup 5k and both are held September 26th. They are both pretty cool and here is why.

So the Company Cup 5k is pretty cool because it can be done a few different ways, You can do it individually, or with a team. You can have as many people on your team as you want, but only the top four finishers on your team will get scored. Sound familiar? It is a modification of cross country. The main difference is that in cross country it is the top five whose finishes count. I love this idea because outside of high school and college I don't think that you can compete in cross country, but this is basically cross country. Something else that is cool about it is that they encourage you to do it with your company but you don't have to. You could do it with your friends and family instead if you would prefer. From what I can tell the purpose of this is to encourage companies to be healthy.

Then there is the Wasatch Mile. Much like the Company Cup 5k this is an event that is difficult to find outside of high school and college so it is awesome that they are doing it. It may not be on a track like it was a an athlete in high school and college, but it is a mile race and I would like to see more of this. This race will be cool too because they will divide the racers based on their mile time. For the ladies if their mile time is slower than a 6:46 you will race in the 1st group. If your time is between 5:11 and 6:45 you will race in the second group. and if you can prove that your mile time is faster than a 5:10 from other mile races you've done, then you can compete in the elite group. For the gentlemen any one that is slower than a 5:46 goes in the first group, anyone between a 4:31 and a 5:45 goes in the second group and anyone faster than a 4:30 mile will compete in the elite group. I for one would love to run this race and also watch those competing in the elite group to see how they do and see what kind of talent comes out to compete.

I think both of these races will be a blast. to find out more check out their website at http://www.company5k.com/Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03977449554519410762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6998475447742174547.post-11211544376173647022016-08-24T17:51:00.000-07:002016-08-24T17:51:11.896-07:00Aasics Dynaflyte Review

Recently on August 23rd I went to a local mile run where we had the option of testing a pair of the Aasics Dynaflyte shoe. I thought this would be a great opportunity to test them out and share with you my opinion based on running a mile in them.
The first thing I noticed when I put them on was how comfortable they were. The toe box had a little more room in them than I am used to and I really liked it. I also noticed that these shoes were very lightweight with high breathe-ability. Currently I am using the GT-2000, and the Dynaflyte is lighter and more roomy.
One down side to these shoes is that when I ran on the track with them it felt like my feet were burning from friction. I believe this could have been resolved with a different size.
Also I don't know what your running shoe budget is, but this pair is $140 on Aasics website so it is probably pretty similar wherever you buy it. This is a relatively new shoe so from what I can tell they are starting out with the standard sizes and will roll out more sizes later on. I enjoyed running in these shoes and would love to try them out for more mileage. If you would like more information as to the specifics of the shoe check out their website .http://www.asics.com/us/en-us/dynaflyte/p/0010266086.9020Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03977449554519410762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6998475447742174547.post-66565673276139116242016-06-09T17:06:00.000-07:002016-06-09T17:06:00.021-07:00Bryce Canyon Half Marathon

Coming up in one month is the Bryce Canyon Half Marathon on July 9th http://www.brycecanyonhalfmarathon.com/. I think I first heard about this race in 2009. My running partner was training for it and I was just training for the upcoming collegiate year. She invited me to do it with her, but at the time I had no interest in running half marathons. The day of the half marathon came and I got a text from another friend who ran it telling me their time. I was surprised that two of my friends who didn't know each other
ran this race. This was the first half marathon that I ever had interest in doing and it was because two of my friends both went and had a good experience. Even though this was the first one I had even considered for one reason or another I never got around to running it. I am happy to say that this year that will change.
Some of the things that are pretty cool about this race is:

You will get to run through part of bryce canyon for the race, and I have heard that it is very beautiful there.

The race is mostly downhill. This means there is alot of potential to get a fast time, but if you are running this race be sure to do some of your training runs down hill so you will be prepared for it.

You can get half off of Kodachrome state park just for showing your race bib.

All profits go back into the Bryce Canyon Community.

I am really excited to be running this race. I hope to see you all there.
I love exploring the beautiful things that Utah has to offer. There are so many of them, from the mountains to the trails to
the many events going on in the valley. When they are running related I try to post them here for all of you so you can enjoy
them too.
One such event is the Utah County Crossroads half. https://crossroadshalf.com/ One thing that is pretty cool about this race is that as you are running the
race you will come to a crossroad and you can choose which path you want to take. One of the paths has more of a dirt trail
mixed with asphalt and the other is completely asphalt. Each has unique attributes that make them worth choosing and they both
end back at the same place.
This race is intriguing to me because both routes are on a trail albeit different t
ypes of trails. So I like that it is surrounded
by the types of things you would find on a trail, and that it allows me to go exploring all while running a race.
Some other cool features of this race is that there are two different finishers medals. one is for those who run the hollow trail,
and the other is for those who run the Murdock canal trail. Another cool feature is that the shirt highlights the trail you chose
to take.

Overall I think this race will be awesome and I hope to see you all there!
Check out their website and be sure to register. https://crossroadshalf.com
I will be visiting the course hopefully this weekend and taking pictures, but in the meantime all of the photos I used here are from their website.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03977449554519410762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6998475447742174547.post-78893188549167001932016-03-22T17:42:00.000-07:002016-03-23T09:28:40.084-07:00Beat the Sun

Recently I was doing some research for a class and I stumbled upon the Beat the sun event by Asics so I read a little further and discovered that it is really two events that take place on the longest day of the year June 21st.

One event is a global challenge to step outside your comfort zone and strive to beat the sun. Basically you set a goal you want to accomplish and you try to accomplish it on that day. And you share that goal to help you achieve it. I love setting goals. There is nothing more motivating than to work hard for something and see it come to pass. To me this event is about
bettering yourself.

The other event is the relay race around Mount Blanc where 24 amateur athletes are paired up with professional athletes and they are divided by which continent they are on and they race each other, and the sun around Mount Blanc. This event is really hard to get into but it would be the coolest thing to participate in. If you want to get selected as one of the 24 athletes there are a few things that you will need to do.

Run a 10k race in under 50 minutes, or a half marathon in under 1 hour and 40 minutes. This will need to be done by April 20, 2016.

Make a 15 second video of why you want to go, and what is the biggest challenge of your life so far.

Provide information on which country issued your current passport.

Agree to comply with the official rules.

All amateur athletes that submit these things will go through a selection process by a panel of judges. The group will be narrowed down to 50 then those 50 will go through the panel of judges and the public can also cast their vote for who they want to be selected; then the 24 athletes that are selected will go on to compete at Mount Blanc.

If you decide that you want to participate in the beat the sun challenge be sure to let us know here at On the Run so we can vote for you. This year I will be participating in the global challenge I have been striving to get my 10k time down to 45 minutes and I think with consistency I will be able to reach that goal on June 21st, but next year I would like to submit an entry for the relay.

Good luck with your current endeavors and have fun on the run!
I've been giving it some thought recently and I've realized that if I'm not setting goals and working on them; then I'm not really living. Living is progressing as a person. In order to progress there has to be something to aspire to such as a dream or a goal. So when I found this event on Facebook I thought this would be the perfect dream to aspire to and it's only fitting that it should be one of my New Years Resolutions for 2016. This event is the Run the year 2016. It's a fairly simple event. You do it on your own time and in your own way. Wether it is individually or with the combined efforts of some friends. You just have to reach 2016 miles. It's really awesome because they have this online community of people all striving for the same goal. To reach those 2016 miles. Some cool features on their website are a mileage log, different trainings for the most common running events 5k, half marathon and a marathon. They have a nutrition section and an online store and so much more. This is an event where you are sure to have a community of support
I will be logging my miles with their mileage tracker, but I will also be logging it here so I am accountable to all of you.
This is the goal that I have set. I will be posting my miles weekly. Let me know in the comments if you've signed up and be sure to share your miles on your journey here as well!
To sign up go to http://www.runtheyear2016.com
Recently this race was posted to the facebook page and I have taken a look at it and wanted to share it with all of you.

RODS is an acronym for racing for orphans with down syndrome. The purpose of this race is to raise adoption grant funds which from what I understand makes it less of a financial burden to adopt these children. The secondary purpose of this race is to raise awareness.

Honestly before I found this posted on the page I had no idea that this was something that was needed. Not that it surprises me but it never occurred to me. I think that this is a great thing to support and I like that if you look at their website they talk about some of the people that they are trying to find families for and they also talk about those families that have adopted through their efforts.

I realize this is last minute I didn't see that the sign up ends on December 31, but this is one awesome way to end 2015 on a high note.

All pictures used are from RODS website.

My sister and I found this trail a year ago but didn't get around to doing it until just recently. And I am so glad I did. Unlike most of the trails that I have done this one is not on a mountain, it is in the city. It is a lot like the trails in southern California; no more than 5 minutes to get to a trail.
The trail was a mix of dirt and asphalt depending on what part you were on, and since it is in the city sometimes you can look to any side and see houses, and yet it is secluded with a gorge and different forage rehabilitation projects. In fact the area is so secluded that there is an ancient pit house somewhere on the trail that was just recently discovered. Last April the salt lake tribune wrote an article about it, but they withheld the location of the site to protect it from people who would vandalize it, and once they are done excavating they plan to rebury it to protect it from the danger of the elements. I don't know if it has been covered back up yet, but if it hasn't I would love the chance to see it. If you want to read more about it I'll leave the link at the bottom.

I also love that this trail accomodates people of many hobbies, including horseback riding and mountain biking. My mom love horses so any time I hear about a city trail that is open to horseback riding I like to pass the word along. If you plan to do any of these activities be sure to pack adequate water. I would pack enough water for the amount of time you plan to be on the trail. It is a pretty large trail, I am not sure how far it goes in both directions from the wrangler trailhead but we went about a mile and a half out to where you could see the road again. The trail continued somewhere possibly beneath the road but we didn't continue because we reached one destination, lone peak park.
This may not have had quite as many sights to see as some of the mountain trails but it had some other cool features like a tree with a hand made swing, and random picnic tables that are covered in unkempt trees and weeds. I definitely want to go back and do more exploring of it sometime soon.
If you are looking to check it out yourself the trailhead we used was 10400 South 1300 East
Sandy, Utah. but there is another trailhead that you could use, it is: 2900 East Mt. Jordan Road or
10000 South 2700 East.
This is the website about the ancient pit house.
In its simplest form this recipe only requires two ingredients eggs and rice. But I like to make several variations of this recipe. The one I wanted to include right now is my most recent and possibly favorite variation yet.
Eggs and rice
Ingredients
1 cup cooked rice
2 eggs
1/8 cup frozen spinach
The rest of the ingredients don't have set measurements I try to do a light coating over the eggs and rice.
Chile powder
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Cumin powder
Salt
Pepper
Directions
1. Coat pan in oil and heat rice and spinach.
2. After one to two minutes add both eggs and seasonings and mix with the rice. Once the eggs are cooked it is done.
If the rice is precooked it takes about 5 minutes to make. I usually make this when I have leftover rice that I need to use but you could also make a big thing of rice to use for the rest of the week. A good ratio is 2 cups rice 3 cups water.
Let me know how you like it.

Ok so probably six months ago or longer I asked a question about what race I should write about and there were a few people that suggested the ragnar race. But since I had never done it I never wrote the article. Now though, I am happy to say that I have successfully completed my first ragnar, and would definitely do a second one if given the opportunity.
There were many unique experiences about this race. So I don't know this for sure, but I believe that the race starts at different times depending on the anticipated amount of time it takes you to run the race. So The faster runners would start later than the slower runners so that the race can finish by a certain time on saturday. This year the time was 9 pm. The race started in logan and went through towns like coalsville, Morgan, Huntsville, and park city, and it ended in Midway at soldier hollow.
Every leg is different so I can't say everything awesome that happened on the run, but I was delighted when I found out that I would be running on a trail for one of my legs. I believe that there were two trails, but I have no idea about what the legs were like in the other van. The night running was fun, particularly looking at the constellations while I was running. Everyone who ran got a medal. And there is this leg in the race that is ten miles with some uphills in it without car assistance, and if you finish this leg you get an additional medal for completing that leg.
I think the thing that makes this type of race so great is that you can be complete strangers before the run, and be close friends at the end. This is how it was in my case. I only knew one of the runners but I made some great friends.
If you are considering running a ragnar I say do it because it will be a place where you make friends and strive to reach goals. A couple tips that I would give to anyone running is 1st wear sunscreen. 2nd When it asks for your 10k time be sure that you can actually run that much so that you will have the endurance to do this race. 3rd pack a lot of food, and be prepared to share with your teammates. If you have any questions take a look at their website because it would have eased my concerns if I had looked at it before I ran. And most important have fun on the run!
Whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner the hardest part is coming up with what to make. This week I wanted to include a recipe that is one of my favorites, but it is so simple that you can modify it to your own liking.
This would be the raspberry parfait.
My friend introduced me to this in college she would get frozen raspberries, granola and plain yogurt and just eat it. At first I thought the plain yogurt was awful but it grows on you. Its like getting this bitter taste then a sweet crunchy taste. You can do it with any plain yogurt but my preferences are with organic or greek plain yogurt because I like the taste of those ones better than other plain yogurt.
So here is the recipe.
Ingredients
6 raspberries
1/4 cup granola
1 cup plain greek yogurt.

Directions
In a bowl or a glass layer yogurt raspberries and granola.
Enjoy!

So like I said you can modify this. Change the berries, or just use other fruit, however you like it. To be honest I don't usually ever measure it I like to eyeball it.
Let me know what you think.
What is a great healthy breakfast that you like to make?
It was the Mill D north fork trail. So the name is not the most amazing name in the world, but the trail is pretty cool and the different destinations are pretty awesome too. You can either go to dog lake, or desolation lake. I get excited basically any time that the destination is a lake. They are just so fascinating.
Unfortunately due to time restraints we were unable to complete trail, but it was pretty awesome. This was a dirt trail that started out fairly steep then leveled out and was very cushiony, perfect for running. The portion of the trail that we did has great tree coverage and a great view of the mountains. If you are looking for a place to enjoy nature this is the perfect trail. The distance to dog lake is 2.6 miles while the distance to desolation lake is 3.5. I for one am excited to go back and finish this trail sometime this summer.
What trail would you like me to write about next?
Bountiful, UT. These are two of the reasons why I like this park.

There is this hill that you can run up to do hill sprints. Luckily its not a very long hill, but it is steep enough that it will push you.

There is a paved path that is great for running on. Its not exactly a track because the distances are off, but it is great if you want to get in some interval training or if you are a beginner looking for a place to build your base. The distance around the loop is about .37 miles.

This park is a great running place for anyone who lives in the area or who is vacationing and is looking to get a quick run in while they are here.

I included a link to mapmyrun that shows the mueller park loop. Let me know if there are any other parks you would like me to write about or what kind of article you would like me to write next. I have a couple things in the works but I am excited to hear your feedback!

Have fun on the run!

It was the boys chase girls half marathon in Hunstville, Utah. This was a great experience for a first half marathon. I really just stumbled on this race when I was searching for something else and when I read the name of the race I thought it was funny so I decided to sign up.
I had a couple goals for this race. They were to make friends, to come in under three hours and to enjoy the scenery. I am happy to report that I accomplished all three of these goals, and I even found another trail that I would like to try out in the future.
The first mile of this race was all up hill, but then the next eight miles were down hill. It leveled out for the last 4 miles with the occasional rolling hill.
I honestly loved the scenery that was on the trail there were some springs of water scattered on the trail which is always invigorating to me, and there were some incredible mountain ranges. Aside from the scenery I think my highlight of the race was at the 1.5 miles left where the aid station was Hawaiian themed and they rang the cattle bell signifying the final stretch of the race.
Everyone who ran got a medal, but I thought I would mention the youngest runners and also the fastest runners. So the youngest runner on the course was a 12 year old boy. My sister watched the race and apparently he came in so fast that they thought he probably ran the 10k. However I can attest that he ran the half since I saw him pass me and I was quite surprised. He came in with a time of 1:39.09! He kicked my butt that's for sure; then the youngest girl to race was 18, there were actually two 18 year olds to race. I ran with one of them and the other was significantly faster than me with a time of 2:07.40. The fastest man to race got a time of 1:17.59, and the fastest lady was 1:34.39.
So there were definitely some awesome stuff going on in the half marathon.
The 10 and 5k were significantly less represented since there were less than 20 runners in each of those races. If you are looking for a race to medal in these ones would be the perfect choice.
One thing I really liked about this race was the comfortable environment. I would recommend this race to anyone that is looking for an enjoyable first half marathon and to anyone that wants to enjoy the scenery and the views.
Some reasons for it is because while its challenging its achievable which is very empowering. As well as providing a unique sense of separation from the city while being minutes from it. I did this trail at the start of the new year with some friends and found that there was a mix of rocky areas and smooth areas. although my favorite part was somewhere in the middle there is a slight decline that puts you in a small patch of trees then comes right back up again towards the rocky part of the trail. This trail is 5.8 miles long and when you get to the top you can look down towards the city.
I would say that this is a moderately difficult trail getting to the top is exhilarating. Personally I would bring two at least one liter of water while doing this trail. Of course I would recommend doing it with two half liter water bottles because that is typically how much water a regular sized water bottle contains.
Iron Mountain trail is just off of poway rd and highway 67.
see you all on the trail!

I was going to use a different picture but I couldn't find it.

I was thinking of a couple of the reasons that I run or the reasons and I thought it would be fun to see everyone else's reasons why they run too.

There are three reasons that I wanted to share.

Winning. when I was running in high school I honestly ran to win. I didn't always win, and in fact I rarely won, but I believed that I could win and it propelled me to be faster. I believed that there was no one that I couldn't beat. I also knew that it would take hard work but i knew that all things are possible for those that believe and really push for it.

No limits. Right along with what I was saying about winning another major reason why I ran was to prove that no one could decide my limits for me. I knew that the most important person that I needed to believe in me was me.

Courage. Another reason I run is to face my fears. It represents me overcoming my fears and being stronger for them. Everytime I run I am building my mental strength; which I can use in any other activity throughout the day.

So those are just a few of my reasons. Why do you run?

This past weekend Southern Utah University was spread throughout the state of California with athletes at Stanford, San francisco, and Pomona. They were set to break some personal records and hit some qualifying times.
In the 10k Both Nate Jewkes and Hayden Hawks both broke the 29 minute barrier in the event , and nabbed the 2nd and 3rd fastest times in SUU history for the event! Jewkes came in with a time of 28:46.80, and Hawks came in with a time of 28:53.12.
In the 5k Both Matt Wright and Liam Kennel hit qualifying marks and had personal bests in the event. Wright came in with a 14:33.84 and Kennel came in with a 14:39.61.
On the girls side Jasmine Hildebrant gave a strong performance of 36:51.23 beating her previous record by more than a minute! Not only did she qualify to race at the conference meet, but her time ranks her number 5 in the conference!
Just as Jewkes and Hawks had personal bests in the 10k together Ashley Tyndall and Angie Nickerson pulled personal bests in the 5k together. Tyndall came in with a 17:51.56, and Nickerson came in with a 17:56.61 making them the first female freshmen in SUU history to break 18 minutes on a 5k.
For the sprinters Maya Franco raced to a time of 11.99 making her time the 4th fastest in suu history!
Congratulations to all the athletes that competed at this race and keep up the hard work!
This would be an amazing event just to participate in but our runners demonstrated that they weren't here just to participate in the national championships, but they were here for the gold. Which is exactly what the boys 4x800 team Smith, Blanchard, Ward, and MacKay did. After a devastating 2nd place in the 4xmile of less than half a second, they knew that they could win in the 4x800. They were in second up till the last leg when MacKay turned in a split of 1:52.4 to pull ahead of Fordham prep who came in just a second after. Their time of 7:42.19 is the fastest in Utah history. The record hasn't been broken since 1998!
This was an excellent performance for them, but they weren't the only Davis runners at nationals.
Sophmore Aubrey Argyle competed in the 5,000 meters, and came in fourth with a time of 16:50.53 which is an incredible time for any runner, but it is even more incredible when you realize that she still has outdoor track season to beat that time, as well as two more years after that where she too could come out on top at a national event.
Congratulations to all the runners that competed, I hope that your outdoor season brings more successes such as these.
Well that leaves you with a couple options either open that bag of chips, or go to a fast food restaurant, but if you have a few good recipes that you know how to make that are fast; then you could have finished cooking the meal in the time it takes you to go eat out, an it is typically healthier this way too. One meal that is both delicious and quick is asian lettuce wraps. Who would have thought that they could be so easy?
Here is my version of the recipe for the desperate foodie runner.

Ingredients:
1 lb ground turkey burger
1/2 teaspoon ginger
2 teaspoons garlic
2 teaspoons minced onion
Hoisin sauce to taste
iceberg lettuce
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoons soy sauce
1 can water chestnuts chopped
Directions:

cook the ground turkey burger (usually about 5-7 minutes)

mix in minced onion, garlic, ginger, pepper, soy sauce and water chestnuts. continue cooking another 2-3 minutes.

remove from heat put desired amount of meat in lettuce add hoisin sauce to taste.

So this is a simple delicious recipe that takes no more than 10 minutes. I will be posting at least one quick meal a month so if you have any ideas for quick meals share in the comments and I may include your recipe in the next Meals on the run.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03977449554519410762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6998475447742174547.post-77131419383199277882015-02-12T17:14:00.000-08:002015-02-12T17:14:08.800-08:00The runners trick to curing shin splints

http://digitaltrackandfield.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/women-distance-runner.jpg

So when I started up running again this last year after a 2 year hiatus is discovered some pains that I had never experienced before. I discovered the pain commonly referred to as shin splints. Considering I went six years of running never experiencing this pain I really had no idea what to do, so I did what many people do and I looked up to see what it said online that can help prevent shin splints or make them less painful. When I was looking at it online the main thing that they said was to decrease your mileage and if it doesn't go away to see medical help because it could turn into something worse if it isn't taken care of, but there were also some things that lots of people do to prevent shin splints.

These are some of the tricks that I, and people I know have tried and found that will help with shin splints.

Change worn out running shoes for new ones. Admittedly this is one that I have never really been good about keeping to, but it is important that your shoe can support you while you are running.

Stretch your calf muscles. One thing that contributes to shin splints is tight calf muscles. Be sure to stretch your calf muscles 2 to 3 times a day for about 30 seconds each time.

Do front leg exercises. This helps in prevention, but it also helps to ease the pain. Some front leg exercises that you could do are:

Heel walking

Toe lifts

Tapping your feet

Writing the alphabet with your feet in the air

4. Running on grass. This helps to take away some of the pounding that may be causing your shin splints in the first place.
5. Rolling them out. Or giving them a good massage.
6. Rest Ice Compression Elevation. Everyone says this, and it does work. The key is the resting part. This can be really hard for runners. My sister has had shin splints before in high school when she was running she told me that she prefers to ice, then immediately after use heat. I'm not sure if it works, but it is supposed to feel good.
What tricks do you use to get rid of shin splints? Do you have experience with these methods? Which one works the best for you?
Several weeks ago I was in San diego with my sister and we decided to drive around till we found a trail that we wanted to do. We made our way to a couple hill tops and finally we found the Nighthawk trail.
This trail is about 4 miles round trip and there are several really cool things about it. When we were doing this trail we found a sign that talks about the Native American tribe kumeyaay (koo-mee-eye) that used to dwell in these hills. It had some pictures of these different tools they would use in preparing food and even suggested that its possible to find them in the hills. In case you want to find them they are ehmuu (mortar) which is a hole used in milling acorns, ephii (metate) is a flat sometimes portable grinding surface, and habiichaa (mano) which is a hand held stone used for grinding. I was absolutely excited about this and thought for sure that I would find some, but despite my best efforts I was unable to find any on the trail, or on the adjoining Miner's ridge loop trail that we went on. But if you find any of the objects be sure to take pictures and post them on the facebook page or in a comment because I would love to hear about where they were, and how you found them.
Another cool thing about this trail is that there are whole stretches where you can look out and see three cities at once, and if you turn the other direction you can see San Diego.
Of the trails that I have done in California they all seem to be meant to encourage the masses to leave their houses and enjoy nature, this one is no different. Its dog friendly, and according to http://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/parks/osp/blackmtn/todo.shtml it's horse friendly too! The trail is there for you to enjoy, and I think they do a good job. In preparation for this trail I brought one water bottle and that was sufficient, but if you are planning on doing some of the adjoining trails and making a day of it then I would bring 1 to 2 liters of water.
The trail head begins at Hilltop community park, and ends at the microwave towers at the peak. If you are looking for a chance to appreciate nature then this is the trail for you.
What trails have you done? Which one would you like me to do next?

Alright This is the final article in the becoming a fitness champ series. For those who are new to the series be sure to check out my other three articles because they go into more detail about what we can do to become fitness champs and accomplish our goals.
There are many ways that people can become fit, but the things that I included in these articles are things that I have done or am already doing. Just to recap they are

Having a desirable reward for your efforts. This would be different for everyone, but it needs to be something that important enough that you are willing to put in the work. It needs to be something worth working towards.

Incorporate fun activities that increase your heart rate into your daily routine. As you do this you will make a lasting change within yourself.

Make good nutritious choices daily. This will help you to have more energy, and it can become a habit.

Become fit with a friend. This will benefit both of you. By doing it together you will want to do it and you will be accountable to someone thus increasing your chance for succes.

Many times we set goals for ourselves and we struggle to accomplish them, but with these options accomplishing a fitness goal is attainable. As I wrote these things that you could do to become fit I tried to choose things that weren't terribly difficult but were things that you could be consistent in because one killer workout doesn't make you an athlete, but hundreds of workouts that you enjoy and get your heart rate up do. The same goes for any goal you are trying to accomplish consistency makes habit.

What ideas do you have for being fit? What ideas do you have for accomplishing your goals?

Back in pt. 1 I mentioned about how getting rewards and social life affects your overall fitness.

Then in pt. 2 I talked about what we are doing now to accomplish our goals. Today I wanted to dive a little deeper into the social aspect of fitness. Again if you haven't read the last two articles be sure to check them out because the purpose of these articles is to become a fitness champ! And what I mean by that is that you want fitness to be a part of your lifestyle.

As mentioned in pt 1 we are generally active because our friends are active. In high school a large part of our social life includes some kind of sport whether it is joining a team or going to the Friday night football game sports are a central focus in our lives. Because its what our friends are doing. After high school there are generally two things that will happen our focus and social life will shift to college and our future career, or it will skip college all together and go straight to our career. We will have new friends with new ideas for socializing and we will do the same things as them. For many people these social circles don't include doing active things. Those people that do stay active are either really dedicated, or they have a workout buddy/social circle. People that they can go do fun things with and be accountable to. People that help them merge their active and social lives into one!

If you are seeking to make a lasting change in your life, then it would be important for you to surround yourself with the people that are already doing those things, or who have the same desire. As you surround yourself with people who are also active, you will find that you will become more active too.

The question then is: what do I need to do to surround myself with those kind of people?
I met with one of the owners of Run Gr8 several months ago and he told me about how they have group runs that they do once a week on Tuesdays, and they also have a special group run on Saturdays for the ladies. This is a unique opportunity because you can meet with other people who have the same interests and go running with them and afterwards you can network with other runners and meet with them later on in the week to go running again.

This is one example that happens in Riverton, Utah, but it is not the only place that does it. I'm sure if you go to any running store they will be able to send you in the right direction as far as groups that go running in your area to give you that social atmosphere. If you can't find one, start one, or if running is not your thing; then I'm sure you could go to a store specific to the activity you like and they could tell you about all the awesome opportunities happening in your area. Personally I think this is the easiest way. Some other ways could be joining a club, signing up for a race, or getting a personal trainer. These are just a few ways that I thought of that you could surround yourself with those kind of people.

Ok so last week we focused on our habits we have now and our
habits we had in high school. We specifically talked about rewards and social
life. If you haven't read last week's article be sure to read it before you
read this one. It will help you to see where you were, and where you are now.

Today I wanted to talk about what we are doing now to accomplish
the goal of becoming a fitness champ. For me fitness is relatively simple it
comes from an active lifestyle, and from good nutritious food choices.

I know that sometimes it appears that living an active lifestyle
is hard. Sometimes the thought of the requirement makes it seem like something
that I don’t want to do, like training to climb Mount Everest. Of course
knowing that we climbed it would be awesome but may not be worth the cost as we
are watching our favorite show on TV.
But I can tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way. It could be far
simpler. Some fun things that you can do to be active are: playing soccer,
playing tag, playing basketball, hands up stands up, dancing, skating, roller
lading, sledding, snow boarding, skiing, hiking, snow shoeing, and going for an
evening walk. Really its any fun thing that requires you to get off the couch.
None of these things are particularly hard, but they make a difference.

If living an active lifestyle seems hard, making good nutrition
choices seems even harder. Those cookies taste so good I just can’t give them
up. Nutrition doesn’t have to be painful to our souls. These are 5 small things
that you can do to eat just a little bit healthier.

1. Cook at home instead of eating out.

2. Replace sour cream for plain Greek yogurt.

3. Eat whole wheat instead of white, and
brown rice instead of white.

4. Switch soda for juice, or water.

5. Include either a fruit or a vegetable with
every meal.

These are some ideas that my siblings and I came
up with. What are some fun activities that you do? What are some life hacks
that you have for nutrition? Wherever you are at now is just the starting line
to becoming fit. You can reach your goals!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03977449554519410762noreply@blogger.com0
